Bullnose Tile & Stone – Rebelling Against Monotony

img_0445

Why we love this made-in-BC tile flooring company

At CV Floors, we love local. We’re proud to serve the Comox Valley from our flooring showroom in Courtenay, BC, and we love carrying products from BC flooring distributors like Bullnose Tile & Stone.

Bullnose’s motto is “Rebelling against monotony,” and it shows in its eclectic range of tile flooring and wall tile products. The southwestern colours veritably pop out of its hand painted Brushstrokes series of Mexican Talavera tiles, while its Motawi line provokes discussion and enlightenment with its designs inspired by the traditions of Art Deco and Art Nouveau.

Of course, Bullnose also carries more understated and sophisticated looks, as well as a range of pebble mosaics and stone tile designs.

About Bullnose Tile & Stone

Bullnose Tile & Stone was founded in Vancouver in 1992 by the husband and wife team of Steve and Laura Weiss. They work directly with manufacturers and artisans who produce tiles to Bullnose’s precise specifications, including an array of glaze colours developed by Bullnose exclusively for Western Canada.

What you won’t find from Bullnose are factory tiles made for the masses. Bullnose Tile & Stone products are handcrafted, perfectly imperfect and one-of-a-kind. In every way, they are designed to stand out.

Hardwood flooring that won’t harm air quality

We’ve all heard about how off-gassing from new flooring and other products can affect the indoor air quality of a home. Not so when it comes to Kentwood Hardwood Flooring.

In its commitment to preserving indoor air quality and formaldehyde emissions, Kentwood goes far beyond current regulations. In fact, it tests all of its engineered flooring against the air quality standard that’s widely considered the strictest in the world: California’s CA Section 01350. LEED considers this standard to be the best indicator of a floor’s ability to contribute to high indoor air quality.

The benefits of cork flooring

Harvested from the bark of cork oak trees native to Spain, Portugal and Tunisia, cork is a natural and renewable material that’s been used as a building material for centuries.

TORLYS cork flooring at Comox Valley Floors

Cork flooring has become a popular choice for homeowners for several reasons:

  • Cork floors are comfortable. A cork floor provides a comfortable cushion underfoot because it gives way when compressed. It’s also a natural thermal and acoustic insulator, leaving rooms with cork flooring naturally warm and quiet.
  • Cork floors are durable. Properly maintained cork flooring can last 40 years or more. Cork floors are resistant to cracks and abrasions, impermeable to gas and liquid and bounce back without leaving permanent furniture indentations.
  • Cork floors are healthy. Cork is naturally resistant to mold, mildew and termites. It’s also anti-microbial and doesn’t off-gas or shed microfibres that negatively affect indoor air quality.
  • Cork floors are practical. The pattern and color of the cork penetrates the thickness of the material, so they’re retained as your flooring wears over the years.
  • Cork floors are safe. Cork is fire-resistant, only melting or igniting at very high temperatures. And if it does burn, cork generates less smoke and releases far less toxic material than vinyl flooring.
  • Cork floors are versatile. Readily available in tiles and planks that come in many styles, colors and sizes, cork flooring can be used to create whatever flooring look you desire.

If those aren’t enough reasons to make you seriously consider cork flooring for your next project, here’s one more: Cork floors are good for the environment.

Plus, in addition to being a fabulous surface floor product, cork can also be used as an underlay for hardwood, laminate and ceramic tiles to reduce noise in your home.

At Comox Valley Floor Centre, we carry a wide selection of cork flooring, including TORLYS Smart Cork and Wicanders Cork Flooring—they’re beautiful, warm and natural. Stop by our Courtenay showroom and we’d be happy to show you some great styles!

Cork floors are great for the environment

Cork flooring has become immensely popular for several reasons – including its cushiony comfort, its durability and its ability to retain its stylish look for years.

In addition to all the other benefits of cork flooring, however, is one more great one: its environmental impact (or lack thereof).

As a building material, cork has little negative impact on the environment because harvesting practices are sustainable and the manufacturing process generates little waste.

TORLYS cork flooring at Comox Valley Floors

Harvested from the bark of cork oak trees native to Spain, Portugal and Tunisia, cork is a natural and renewable material that’s been used as a building material for centuries. Cork oak trees must be at least 25 years old before the bark can be harvested. After that, cork can be gathered every 8 to 14 years without killing the tree. The typical life span of a cork tree is 150 to 200 years, but they’ve been known to last up to 800 years.

As a byproduct of the manufacturing of cork stoppers for wine bottles, the cork flooring process creates almost no waste. The leftovers from stopper production are collected and finely ground. Binders, such as urea melamine, phenol formaldehyde and natural proteins, are added to hold the cork together. Pigment is then added to create different colors and patterns, and a finish is applied.

In addition to being a fabulous surface floor product, cork can also be used as an underlay for hardwood, laminate and ceramic tiles to reduce noise in your home.
